DIRECTING

I embrace a process-based, ensemble-focused environment across the production and rely heavily on a rhizomial collaborative process. It's the insights from the other artists on the creative team and cast that really inform me about the play and how it is being told. My process moves from a broad collection of ideas and experiments to a very specific structure the actors can rely on to continue to explore every moment through the life of the show.

I've been heavily influenced by Dr. Jerry Crawford's 'Organic Combing' process, which creates an environment where actors help craft the structure of blocking, scene dynamics as well as to help anchor the style of the production. The process engenders the necessity of relationship and ownership of the production. Moreover, its reliance on the ensemble and improvisation ties strongly to the most memorable productions I have been a part of as an actor.  I have extended Jerry's work to the designers and production meetings, assuring everyone has the space for their contributions to the world of the play.

My initial thoughts on the piece are no more than points-of-departure, meant to serve as a foundation. But - like any darling - easily 'killed' to make way for a much better, clearer, more effective choice I couldn't have found on my own.  Oh... and you'll definitely notice - I've a bent for ensemble comedies.
